Hi! My name is...

Abby

Abby is ready to find a loving home of her own. She is an affectionate girl who absolutely loves being petted, scratched, and massaged and will happily seek out a willing hand whenever one is available. She was sadly found wandering as a stray after apparently being abandoned by her previous owners. Despite her difficult start, it was clear that someone had cared for her at some point—she was clean, well-fed, and already had good house manners when she was found. Abby is house-trained, crate-trained, and knows several commands. She is surprisingly calm and easygoing in the home for a young, athletic dog. She is discovering the joy of toys and seems to have a particular fondness for soft stuffies. Her play sessions are usually short, though, because Abby's favorite pastime is settling onto a comfy dog bed for a good snooze. One of Abby's favorite adventures is going to school to pick up the human child in her foster home. She absolutely adores the attention and affection she receives from the kids as they leave school and would happily accept pets from anyone with an available hand! Outside the home, Abby's personality really comes alive. She loves going for walks, exploring new places, following interesting scents, and taking in everything around her. She is an enthusiastic explorer with a strong prey drive, and she truly enjoys using her nose to track interesting smells. Because of this, Abby will need to be securely leashed whenever she is outside a securely fenced area. Her instinct to chase smaller animals is strong. Abby can take some time to build trust with her people. Although she is quick to approach strangers for affection, forming deeper bonds with her foster family has been a gradual process. Over the past couple of months, however, she has steadily learned to trust and connect with them—and once that trust is earned, she is eager to please. Abby does best with patience, consistency, and positive reinforcement. She is sensitive to harsh corrections, raised voices, and sudden physical movements, which can cause her to become frightened. A calm, predictable home where her people will give her time to settle in and build confidence will allow Abby to continue to thrive. Abby also has some challenges when it comes to other dogs. She can be suspicious and territorial around dogs of similar or larger size and is currently working with her foster family on learning that unfamiliar dogs do not necessarily pose a threat to her or her family. Her future adopters should be prepared to continue this work using patient, positive training. Abby is looking for someone who will appreciate her for who she is: a sweet, affectionate, sensitive girl with a curious nature and strong instincts. She has so much love to give and is looking for a person or family willing to earn her trust, respect her boundaries, and help her continue becoming the confident dog she is meant to be. If you're looking for a dog who will happily trade you a lifetime of loyalty for a comfy bed, a good walk, and plenty of scratches, Abby may be your girl!
