Koala’s Story
Pulled from a rural shelter at just two years old, Koala bore the scars of unimaginable hardship—wounds old and new hidden beneath matted fur. Our vet team uncovered severe ear and skin infections and signs she had likely been used as a bait dog.
Then came the toughest battle – Koala was diagnosed with IMHA, a life-threatening condition where her body attacked its own red blood cells. Her survival was uncertain, requiring emergency care, surgeries, and unwavering dedication.
But Koala fought, and because of you, we fought with her. Her smile beams through the volunteer-made scarf, complete with knitted ears, that covers the damage of her past. Today, she’s thriving in a loving forever home, finally receiving the love she always deserved.
Ben’s Story
We met Ben in an overcrowded shelter – heartbreakingly thin with a broken leg failing to heal and eyes pleading for relief.
Ben ‘s leg was beyond surgery. After some worrying, we made the tough call to amputate. The moment he woke up, he began smiling and wagging his tail, soon zooming in freedom.
Ben charmed everyone, cuddling and greeting visitors like old friends. It took 19 weeks to find his new Human but Ben never gave up.
Ben is now thriving in a loving home. “Adopting Ben is the single greatest decision I’ve ever made. He’s always around to keep me company. We relocated to Switzerland for school, and even with three legs he is a better hiker than most!” He’s still named Ben but has earned the nickname Legolas. However he’s called, his story proves the power of love, resilience, and second chances.
Dorothy’s Story
On a quiet morning at Dorothea Dix Dog Park, a woman and her dog spotted a tiny, scared puppy curled up alone. They waited, hoping someone would return, but no one did. Flyers went up, social media posts spread, yet no one claimed her. This little pup had been left behind.
Unwilling to walk away, the woman reached out to us, offering to foster if we took her in. Of course, we said yes. We named her Dorothy, after the park where her new life began. Her sweet nature won over everyone she met. After plenty of love and care, Dorothy – now Lucy – found her forever home, where she now spends her days playing fetch and lounging on the couch, exactly where she belongs. Her new human recently provided us with an update: “Miss Lucy has been living her best life since joining our family. Her favorite things are car rides, meeting new friends at the park, and napping in the sun in her backyard.”
Honey’s Story
Late one night, a white dog darted in front of the car of Jess Jones, our Dog Program Manager. Jess quickly realized two things: Honey was a stray… and she was very, very pregnant. Not with just a few pups as it turns out, but ten!
Jess took the dog in, named her Honey, and found her a safe place to give birth and raise her litter. Thanks to our supporters, Second Chance had the resources to provide the care they needed. Raising a mom and ten pups was no small task! It took endless hours of care and love with our dedicated fosters. Once old enough, the puppies joined our transport program, heading to Rene’s Rescue in Delaware, where Honey and all ten puppies found their forever homes.
Chessie’s Story
Chessie’s life was a struggle, a ghost roaming rural Franklinton for years, surviving on scraps, enduring extreme weather, and dodging humans. Everything changed when Franklin County Animal Control, armed with a chicken sandwich and determination, rescued her and her puppies.
Chessie and her pups were riddled with tick-borne illnesses, heartworms, fear and even an old gunshot wound. Years of fending for herself left her terrified of people. But love and patience work miracles. In a devoted foster home, surrounded by kindness (and treats), she slowly learned to trust.
Chessie eventually found joy in human connection, eventually finding her forever home with an adoptive family from Second Chance. “Bringing Chessie home has been the best decision I’ve ever made”, said her new human. “Seeing her personality shine and her confidence grow has been an absolute joy. I’m so thankful to Second Chance for bringing us together.”
Nilla Wafer’s Story
Nilla Wafer’s journey began in a county shelter as a tiny, vulnerable puppy just a few weeks old in desperate need. Second Chance stepped in, giving her the chance to fight for a better future.
Her first big battle was parvo, a terrifying illness for any dog, especially one so young. Fortunately, her case was mild, and she didn’t need extended hospitalization. But she still faced weeks of quarantine, separated from other dogs and the joys of puppyhood.
With her parvo challenge behind her, she caught kennel cough, extending her isolation to nearly a month. Through it all, Nilla remained sweet and resilient, always hopeful for better days ahead. Once healthy, Nilla experienced the love and care she deserved, thanks to her devoted foster families. After a year of waiting, the moment we all dreamed of arrived when Nilla found her forever home. As her new human said, “She filled the empty space in our hearts.”
Sir Nas’ Story
In the stillness of an early morning, a heartbreaking discovery was made: Sir Nas, a gentle soul with a heart full of love, was found abandoned in a crate outside our adoption center. His microchip offered hope, but both his original and recent owners refused to take him back. Sir Nas had just become a Second Chance pup.
He was diagnosed with a heart defect, pulmonic stenosis, malnutrition, and skin issues. While his heart condition didn’t wasn’t critical, it could have scared off potential adopters. But we knew Sir Nas deserved a chance and, thanks to our supporters, we were ready to give him just that.
A compassionate family saw past his medical needs and into his beautiful heart, welcoming him with open arms and the life he truly deserved. Today, Sir Nas – now named Gizzmo – is thriving in his forever home, where his quirks and needs are met with unconditional love.
