Spotlight on the Animals
Meet Chicken! She’s a 1-year-old Catahoula mix. Chicken loves to get out and do things, including swimming in the lake! If you’re looking for a pup to take running or hiking, she’s your girl! Chicken would be a great dog for an active family with children older than 8 and no other pets. Apply to meet her today!

Meet Robin! She’s a 3-year-old girl with a bewitching personality! Robin knows what she likes–she can be sassy when the mood strikes her, and also sweet when she wants some affection. She’s in a room with other kitties and likes watching what’s going on, but in her forever home, she’d prefer to be the only queen in the castle! Don’t worry, though, she’s plenty enough cat for anyone: she’s very chatty and will always let you know she’s there with you! Come visit her soon!

BIRTHDAY CORNER: It’s Sicily’s second birthday this month! Sicily is a gorgeous, fluffy two-year-old girl. She, like most of our cats, is super sweet, but unlike most cats, she loves getting her belly rubbed! If you fall for tummy bait every time and want a cat who won’t “reward” your belly pets with a bite, can you give Sicily a second chance for her second birthday? Meet her at the Adoption Center!

Help Millbrook Exchange Dog Park Win a $30,000 Makeover!
A week ago at this time, it was a rainy Friday afternoon and Millbrook Exchange Dog Park was a mud pit, just like it is on any other rainy day. Devoid of grass or fun equipment, the park is a big open space around a fenced-off drain, a recent installation designed to improve the park’s serious drainage issues.
On Saturday, October 8, Hurricane Matthew swept through North Carolina, and the park suffered serious damage, forcing it to close while pups awaited repairs. In addition to blowing over some of the smaller trees, the storm knocked the biggest tree in the park–one of the only sources of shade–into the center of the park, making it an unsafe place for dogs to play.
Millbrook Exchange is in second place in the Beneful Dream Dog Park contest. To make the city of Raleigh a better place for dogs to live a healthy, active lifestyle, we need your help to take first place and win a $30,000 makeover.
To win, we need more people to vote daily until Nov. 1 by posting once a day on Twitter or Instagram (or both!) using two hashtags in each post: #Raleigh AND #BenefulDogPark. Please ask dog-loving businesses to add the hashtags at the end of their posts, too!
News from Second Chance
Welcome to another edition of The Companion! Here’s what Second Chance has been up to since our last newsletter.
On Friday, September 30, Bottle Revolution on Lake Boone Trail hosted Second Chance for Happy Hour. Thanks to everyone who came out to enjoy some drinks and take their chances at winning raffle prizes (including six bottles of the very exclusive Bell’s Black Note Stout), the animals of Second Chance received $745! We had a wonderful time showing off the kittens we brought with us, meeting everyone’s dogs, and enjoying a cold brew after a long work week!
If all that sounds like fun and you missed it, you’ll be happy to hear that Barks ‘n Brews is back! We’ll be at Raleigh Brewing Company on Sunday, October 30, from 1:00 to 4:00 pm. The event will be similar to years past (Second Chance animals will benefit from the sale of a special brew and everyone will have a chance to win raffle prizes, including baskets for dog lovers, cat lovers, and beer lovers), but this year’s event also includes some exciting new additions, like the food food truck for dogs, Hungry Paws, that serves dog treats and two kinds of doggy-safe beer!
We’ll also have a doggy Halloween costume contest, and this year’s prize includes not only Raleigh Brewing Company merch, but also a portrait of the winner in our dog photo booth! Everyone will surely enjoy having an awesome photo of their pup taken in the doggy photo booth by pet photographer Pawww Snap. (Like any good photo booth, we’ll have some Halloween props on hand to dress your pup for those who want to don more than their birthday suit for a photo!) Click here to learn more, see the raffle prizes, and buy raffle tickets! (Can’t make it? Need not be present to win!)
Our Animals Would Love TREATS this Halloween! Can You Help?
Kids aren’t the only ones hoping to score big on Halloween–our cats and dogs are also hoping you’re handing out goodies for them! There are two ways to treat the animals: order an item from the list below or make a donation toward our purchasing cost!
Our Amazon wish list for dogs is full of yummy treats! (If you order from the wish list, Amazon will ship them right to our door.) Our dogs enjoy:
- Charlee Bear treats with liver, turkey and cranberries, or chicken and veggies.
- Merrick Power Bites.
- Milo’s Chicken Meatballs.
- Crazy Dog Bacon Train-Me treats.
Our cats would love to be treated to new beds! Their absolute favorite are these donut beds. Can you send them a new bed or two today? (Our address is 6003 Chapel Hill Rd., Ste. 133, Raleigh, NC 27607.)
THANK YOU AND
HAPPY HALLOWEEN!
Did You Know?
Can you smell that whiff of mischief in the air? It’s Halloween season. Even if you’re an adult, you probably get a happy little tingle from this haunting holiday, but pets often find it truly scary…and some elements of Halloween can be dangerous. From candy to costumes and decorations to trick-or-treaters, click the link below for tips on taking the terror out of your pet’s Halloween!
How Can You Help Our Animals?
There are many ways to support our rescue!
Amazon Shopping
We are always grateful to those of you who drop off donations at the Center, but even if you live far away or just don’t have the time to make the drive to us, Amazon will ship items ordered from our wish lists for cats and dogs directly to the Center! (Double donation opportunity: select Second Chance as your Amazon Smile charity and use a Chome extension like Amazon Assistant to make sure you’re always ordering on Smile!) We are currently in need of dog treats.
(Not ordering from Amazon? See Our Wish List )
Volunteer
We are also always looking for volunteers! Unlike other organizations, we do not require a minimum number of hours per week or month, and our volunteer opportunities range from daily cat room cleaning to special events. Almost anything you enjoy doing can somehow benefit our animals–just ask!
Foster
And of course, we could not operate our dog program without foster parents. The more foster parents we have, the more dogs we can save! (Not a dog person? We also foster kittens under six months old.) We provide the supplies; YOU provide the love and fun!
Thank You!
Thanks for reading this issue of The Companion, and for all you have done for the animals, be it adopting, volunteering, fostering, attending our events, donating money or supplies, or sharing our social media posts. Thanks also to all of our corporate sponsors!
