The Petco Foundation has once again partnered with Second Chance Pet Adoptions and has given the organization a $4,500 grant, which will increase the intake and adoption rates for cats.

While most adoptable cats await loving homes in cageless community rooms at Second Chance, all cats (kittens are fostered) are first caged upon intake until they have gone through their state-mandated quarantine period, and the type of cages in which they are kept can shorten the time between their arrival and their adoption. Through a prior grant, the Petco Foundation funded the upgrade of walled fiberglass condos that were easier to clean and kept the cats inside from touching and breathing on one another. The impact of the installation of the new condos was undeniable: the cats’ environment was cleaner, their time in quarantine was more effective, and they were moved into community rooms faster, making room for more cats to be rescued and brought into the vacant quarantine space. In the first year of using the new condos, Second Chance rescued 9% more cats than the previous year.

The Petco Foundation investment has enabled Second Chance to purchase more condos with an even greater number of new-and-improved features. Because of the Petco Foundation, the cats in the quarantine ward have enjoyed a greater quality of life in Shor-Line’s Kat Kaves, and the newer condos allow Second Chance’s staff/volunteers to conserve valuable resources when sanitizing. Second Chance’s Development and Communications Manager, Rachel Cronmiller, says, “We are confident that we’ll see an even shorter length-of-stay with these condos. Our ultimate goal is to make better use of our space, decrease time-to-adoption, and save as many lives as possible, a goal shared by the Petco Foundation, whose mission is to create a better world for animals and the people who care for them. They’ve invested in Second Chance time and time again, and we are grateful.”

This grant investment is part of the Petco Foundation’s recent distribution of more than $13M to animal welfare organizations nationwide. In addition, the Petco Foundation distributed $1M in emergency product and cash donations to partner organizations facing the challenges of the COVID-19 crisis and put out a national call to mobilize animal lovers to take action and Pledge to Save Pet Lives. About the Petco Foundation (www.petcofoundation.org)

At the Petco Foundation, we believe that every animal deserves to live its best life. Since 1999, we’ve invested more than $280 million in lifesaving animal welfare work to make that happen. With our more than 4,000 animal welfare partners, we inspire and empower communities to make a difference by investing in adoption and medical care programs, spay and neuter services, pet cancer research, service and therapy animals, and numerous other lifesaving initiatives. Through our Think Adoption First program, we partner with Petco stores and animal welfare organizations across the country to increase pet adoptions. So far, we’ve helped more than 6.5 million pets find their new loving families, and we’re just getting started. Visit petcofoundation.org to learn more about how you can get involved.
