Lisa Imhof
Lisa began her journey in animal welfare as a kennel assistant and technician assistant at a veterinary hospital from 1988 to 1991. In 2006, she joined Second Chance Pet Adoptions part-time as a kennel helper, quickly proving her dedication and expertise. By 2007, Lisa was promoted to Facility Manager, and just a year later, she took the reins as the Director. With decades of hands-on experience and a passion for animal welfare, Lisa has been a driving force behind the success and growth of Second Chance Pet Adoptions.

Jessica Jones
Jess Jones has always had a heart for animals, often bringing home stray cats and dogs during her childhood in West Virginia. In 2015, her passion led her to Paws for Life, where she became a foster parent and quickly immersed herself in the rescue world. By 2017, Jess joined Second Chance as a volunteer, all while balancing a part-time role as a kennel technician and veterinary assistant at a Wake Forest hospital. Though her time in veterinary medicine was fulfilling, Jess is thrilled to be fully dedicated to her passion for rescue as the Transport Manager at Second Chance. When she’s not working, you can find Jess managing her 47-acre farm, where she juggles an ever-growing list of projects with her 4 children, a pack of special-needs dogs, several cats, 3 horses, pigs, goats, and a continually expanding flock of chickens.

Mia Xavier
Mia joined Second Chance in November 2023, bringing with her over 15 years of expertise in fundraising, business development, and marketing communications. Originally from California, Mia spent a decade in Boston and Providence, RI, before making North Carolina her home in 2010. She has a passion for helping organizations craft compelling stories that drive both fundraising and awareness. When she’s not working, Mia enjoys exploring North Carolina’s trails and greenways, tending to her garden, diving into a good book, or following a new recipe. As a proud mom to a daughter at UNC Chapel Hill and a son at NC State, Mia embraces her divided household with pride.

Alex Barker (They/Them)
Alex hails from southern West Virginia, where their love for animals blossomed as they rescued and cared for a wide range of creatures, from cats and dogs to squirrels, opossums, and even deer. With a natural inclination to help, Alex pursued a career in social work, dedicating their time to supporting and uplifting youth and young adults recovering from trauma. After serving as a Volunteer Coordinator for two years and earning a master’s degree, Alex discovered the perfect blend of their passions in the role of Volunteer Manager at Second Chance. Excited to bring their creativity and enthusiasm to the team, Alex is eager to support volunteers and is always open to brainstorming innovative ideas to enhance the volunteer experience.

Karla Gutierrez Carreon
Karla first joined Second Chance Pet Adoptions as a volunteer on July 5, 2022, and quickly became one of the most dedicated dog walkers. Known as Momma Karla, she treats every dog like her own, spending countless hours providing enrichment, love, and one-on-one outings. Her deep compassion and commitment to rescue made her an invaluable part of the team, and we’re thrilled to have her on staff. When she’s not at Second Chance (which isn’t often!), Karla enjoys spending time with her husband, her two daughters, and her three beloved dogs—including a foster fail from Second Chance. Originally from Mexico, she frequently visits her family there. With her huge heart and unwavering passion for rescue, Karla is an incredible advocate for animals in need.

Perry Holmes
Perry has been a large part of Second Chance as our dedicated custodian since 2008. Not only does he keep our facility in top shape, but he also played a key role in its construction. A proud father, grandfather, and friend to everyone, Perry brings a passion for cars and motorcycles to his life outside of work. His infectious humor and constant encouragement—often telling staff and volunteers they’re doing "a mighty, mighty fine job"—keep everyone smiling. And Perry, we all know you’re doing a mighty, mighty fine job too!
